What about Halloween 'vandalism insurance'

Band offers Halloween 'vandalism insurance'

When Skyview High School band students hit the streets last week, selling "vandalism insurance," more than one neighbor cocked an eyebrow.

The pitch: For $5, Skyview High School band members will clean up an insured resident's property if it gets trashed on Halloween. Band director Steven Robertson concocted the idea while at Columbia River and has since brought it to Skyview.

More than a few cynical neighbors have mused aloud that "vandalism insurance" sounds eerily similar to "protection insurance" offered by Sicilian crime families circa 1930.

Robertson said he's heard similar comments over the years.

"Once in a while, people say, 'Are you telling me that you'll do damage to our home?' he said. "Normally, we sell to neighbors the kids know."

Skyview senior Justin Mich has raised $92, including donations. He dresses in his uniform and hits the pavement with a few band buddies.

"I introduce it and then I ask if they want to buy it," Mich said. "No matter how much we don't want it to happen, it does happen."

Hmmm ... Sounds like making an offer that can't be refused.

"It's been pretty positive," he said. "No one's brought up that aspect. Is there anything else you want to ask me?"

Mich was, after all, at practice. And Robertson, to put it mildly, doesn't suffer fools.

Though Robertson is tough - "That smart-ass attitude won't work!" he barked at students during Monday's rehearsal - and not very forgiving of misplaced footsteps, he's not a Mafioso.

He is, however, an expert at raising money. He's taking members of the band to Beijing to perform at the 2008 Summer Olympics. They'll be playing with musicians from 40 countries.

The trip will cost about $2,000 per student. Vandalism insurance is one of the smaller fundraisers; Robertson expects to raise about $500.

"We've sold tangerines and grapefruits," Robertson said. "We've sold turkeys - that's almost a cliché."

When he was in high school, he sold potatoes.

"It worked pretty well, but I couldn't imagine asking the kids to sell potatoes," he said. "With vandalism insurance, people smile if they're seeing it for the first time. The kids go to the same homes year to year. We do some cleanup every year, and those people are pretty pleased."

How long the Insurance Company keep your privacy

You may not know your privacy will be kept in the insurance company's data center when you submit your application and buy policy from them.

Even your policy is lapsed or you change to another company, the privacy is still kept by provious company somewhere.

Consider purging data

SHIP agents are increasingly faced with attempts to obtain delivery of cargo using forged emails, according to the International Transport Intermediaries Club (ITIC).
"Fraud in shipping is endemic, cargoes are valuable, and it has never been easier to forge documents, electronic communications, bills of lading, etc,” the ITIC notes in a statement. “Carriers and their agents must continuously be aware of this fact and take whatever steps are necessary to avoid becoming unnecessarily involved in costly claims for damages which have resulted from a failure to be careful and vigilant.”
A major factor leading to claims by principals against their agents is the misrelease of valuable cargo, ITIC says. Carelessness in dealing with telex release — the release of cargo at one port when the bill of lading is surrendered at another (and is almost always done by email) —has contributed to these losses.
ITIC notes two problems with telex release: they are often worded in a careless manner, and are subject to email fraud.
Manipulated emails are received by discharge port agents that authorize the release of cargo. The e-mails confirm freight has been received, when in fact it has not been.
ITIC advises agents asked to perform a telex release to first obtain written authority from their principal. It also cautions that telex releases must never be accepted at face value.

Court discourages lawyer from adding insurer as defendant ‘just in case’

It would appear from a review of these cases that it is the practice of plaintiff’s counsel to commence an action against the plaintiff’s own insurer ‘just in case’ a coverage problem should arise in the course of the action, without there being any reason to believe that such a problem exists at the time of the inception of the action. Such a practice should be discouraged.

It is still a hot issue - Children Insurance

To provide more coverages to uninsured children is very important to protect our future. The human being's future.

WASHINGTON — With children’s health insurance still a hot issue, a handful of Republicans, on the same day the House failed to override the presidential veto of a funding increase, provided a plan of their own.

U.S. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, was among them.

The House last Thursday lacked 13 votes, according to the Associated Press (AP), for an override of President George Bush’s veto of a State Children’s Health Insurance Plan that would have increased SCHIP funding to $35 billion and added 4 million uninsured children to the program.

Insurance for children remains a hot issue

Home insurance rate ruling favors Allstate

It can keep increase for now; agency vows to pursue battle on other fronts.

Now Allstats can increase the rate.

I don't think the department should get involve into the rate. Let business as business.

IMO, if the rate is too high, the homeowner will shop around to find another insurance company. If the margin profit is very high, more investors will join in insurance industry. It will be more competition when more competitors. Then the rate will drop at that time.

The department just need to rule that all major changes of insurance coverage, rates, conditions favored to Insurer should notice to insured and give them enough time to consider and/or find a replacement.

Driver does not hold valid license

According to the court, Carluccio, an employee of Carluccio Construction Inc., was driving the company car, insured by Aviva Insurance Company of Canada, with a license that had expired in January of that year.
Carluccio argued he did not receive a renewal form or any notice from the Ministry of Transportation that his license had expired.
Aviva denied liability to both the construction company and Pat Carluccio on the basis that driving with an expired license was a breach of statutory condition No. 4 of the Insurance Act.

Based on the rule of Ontario Superior Court Justice, the Insurer does not have to provide a defence to its insured.

It is clear breach the statutory condition, will void your policy. Any drivers does not hold valid driver license and have a damage in accident, the Auto Insurance policy will not pay you for the liability or property damage.

Canadian Insurance is still soft market

There are much capital in Canadian reinsurance market.

Some prediction is that soft market will be longer five more years.

Canada’s reinsurance market is flush with enough capital to sustain a soft market for another five years, according to a reinsurance broker speaking at a Professional Liability Underwriter Society (PLUS) Canada chapter education seminar in Toronto. “I believe, firstly, that the soft market has a long, long way to go down yet,” said Jonathan Beach of Beach & Associates Ltd. “The reason I say that is that there is so much capital swishing around in the market.” “Barring catastrophes, which are obviously impossible to predict, I believe we are in for another five years of a softening market,” he said.

Travel Insurance for Canadians

It is an emergency hospital & medical insurance policy, administered by TIC Travel Insurance Coordinators Ltd.

Let me give you some information about this coverage.

1) Why do I need travel Insurance?
In Canada, government health insurance plans will pay only a small fraction of expenses if you are sick or injured while outside Canada, say $30/day. Some hospitals charge thousands of dollars a day, not including doctors' fees or diagnostic services. Without emergency hospital and medical insurance, you and your family would be responsible for these high costs, which can create a significant financial burden. It is true.
Other mishaps like replacing lost or stolen baggage, or buying a one-way ticket because of a missed return flight, can ruin your holiday or business trip.

2) What is not covered?
Travel insurance does not cover everything. Of course.

3) I travel a lot. Can I get a better deal?
Multi-trip plans provide frequent travellers with the convenience of not having to purchase insurance every time you travel. You can take as many trips as you want during the one year coverage period. We call it a annual policy.

4) Are there age limits?
Coverage is not available for persons less than 15 days old. If you are 61 years and older travelling 61 days or longer, you must complete a medical questionnaire and receive written acceptance from TIC.

5) I want to stay longer. Can I purchase further coverage?
Yes, you can, subject to policy terms and conditions.

Note:
This kind of Travel Insurance for Canadians is design for Canadian want to travel to Stats or other country. The premium will vary.

No-fault Auto insurance in Florida

The Florida Legislature has passed a bill to bring back the state's no-fault auto insurance system Jan. 1.

It is a good news for Florida residence. If any accidents happen, the people will be have been covered by Medical care and insurance company will pay the bill to hospital.

If this one is missing, the people may have not enough emergent fund to get proper treatment. Or, after treatment, he can not pay the bill of it.

I trust No-fault Auto Insurance should be included in the basic Auto Insurance coverage.

The bill to restore no-fault passed the House 105-4 early Friday and later in the day was passed unanimously by the Senate. Gov. Charlie Crist has indicated he will sign the bill into law

The system that expired Oct. 1 provided no-fault coverage for damage resulting from automobile accidents and required drivers to buy at least $10,000 in coverage, which covers medical expenses if they have no health insurance. State legislators failed to extend the law during the regular legislative session earlier this year, but the issue was added to the agenda of the special session that started this week.

Auto insurance companies favored the expiration of the system because it was riddled with fraud, but hospitals were worried that they wouldn't get paid for medical care provided to uninsured motorists.

34% profit increase reported of Lloyd's

As we know, Lloyd's of London is the oldest insurance market. The following is its first half year of 2007 profit report.
Looks good on profit in such a soft market.

Lloyd’s has reported a pre-tax profit of £1.8 billion [approximately Cdn$3.65 billion], for the first six months of 2007, marking a 34% increase over last year.
Lloyd’s saw a profit of £1.35 billion [approximately Cdn$2.74 billion] for the same period of 2006.
The insurer also reported a combined ratio of 82.9% for the first half of 2007, compared to 86.0% for the same period in 2006).
A Lloyd’s release contrasts this ratio with an estimated average of 93% for U.S. property and casualty insurers, 90% for U.S. reinsurers, 86% for Bermuda, and 97% for European insurers and reinsurers.
“This result was driven by the favourable rating environment in 2006, together with the release of prior claims reserves,” a Lloyd’s statement says.
This was balanced by the weaker, but still profitable, underwriting conditions experienced in the first half of the year.
“These profits reflect the recent favourable rating environment and a relatively low level of catastrophe claims,” Richard Ward, Lloyd’s chief executive, said in a statement.
“We are now seeing a downward pressure on rates and a softening of conditions across all classes. This reinforces the continued need to focus on underwriting for profit,” he added.

Toyota Canada may entry into auto insurance market

Do you think the Auto Manufacture will get involved into Auto Insurance market? I have not. Now, it may come into East Canada. See news below.

Toyota Canada Inc. is eyeing the car insurance market as part of an aggressive expansion plan, reports the Globe and Mail.
The giant vehicle manufacturer already offers insurance in several other countries, including Japan, Britain, France, Germany, Australia and Thailand, the paper reported.
“If everything goes well, we want to [offer insurance] within a year,” Toyota president Yoichi Tomihara told the Globe and Mail.
While most vehicle manufacturers in Canada have financial services arms, Toyota would be the first to enter the auto insurance market, although its presence would probably be limited to Ontario, Alberta and Atlantic Canada, where the auto insurance market is private, the paper added.
Ryan Lee, a professor in the department of risk management and insurance at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business, commented on the potential move to the Globe and Mail.
Lee told the paper the ability to sell insurance through an existing dealership network would give an auto manufacturer a major advantage at the outset, but it is not clear to what extent such a move would shake up the market.
